Description
This impressive bronze vessel is cast in the form of a standing bird with a swelling body, short legs, and a separately made head-shaped cover. The composition is highly sculptural, combining the mass and stability of a ritual container with the animated profile of a mythical avian creature. Seen in the round, the vessel has a commanding presence, its silhouette defined by the arched chest, curving tail, and alert head with projecting crest and beak-like mouth.
Particularly striking is the treatment of the surface. The body is articulated with bands of incised feather-like patterning, raised scroll borders, and circular medallions that appear to frame stylized mask or beast motifs. These archaistic elements give the vessel a strong ceremonial character while also enriching the sculptural rhythm of the form. The heavily matured patina, with areas of green encrustation and reddish-brown oxidation, adds great visual depth and reinforces the sense of age and ritual gravity.
