Overview
A monumental gilt bronze figure of Manjushri, distinguished by its commanding scale, raised sword, finely modeled ornaments, and powerful tantric-scholastic presence.
Description
This impressive gilt bronze sculpture represents Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, seated in a composed yet highly energized posture with the sword raised above the shoulder. The figure combines serenity and authority in a particularly compelling way: the body remains calm and centered, while the lifted arm and horizontal blade introduce a strong directional force that animates the whole composition. At this large scale, the image has exceptional altar and cabinet presence.
Particularly striking is the refinement of the head and upper body. The face is modeled with a poised, meditative expression, framed by an elaborate crown and large ornamental earrings, while the hair and crest elements rise upward in a richly articulated silhouette. Traces of blue and red pigment, together with surviving gilding, add visual depth and ceremonial richness to the sculpture. The torso is elegantly proportioned and adorned with necklaces, armlets, and jeweled details, all handled with restraint rather than excess, allowing the figure’s spiritual dignity to remain central.
The iconographic emphasis on the sword is essential to the work’s appeal. Held aloft in the right hand, it symbolizes the cutting of ignorance through transcendent wisdom. The left hand is held before the chest in a refined gesture, contributing to the balance between stillness and action that defines the sculpture. The seated posture, broad lap, and symmetrical lower body give the figure structural gravity, while the raised weapon and ornate crown lend the image an unmistakable ritual authority.
The aged surface further enriches the sculpture’s character. Areas of rubbing, tonal variation, worn gilding, and patina development create a highly nuanced skin across the bronze, revealing long devotional life and historical depth. The underside construction also reflects the work’s sculptural seriousness and traditional casting practice. This is best appreciated not only as a religious image, but also as a major work of metal sculpture valued for its scale, iconographic clarity, and commanding visual presence.
