Overview
A substantial Hetian jade boulder with russet skin, finely incised with a poetic inscription and landscape scene, combining natural material beauty with literati refinement.
Description
This large Hetian jade boulder is notable for its softly polished surface, generous weight, and striking natural contrast between the creamy pale stone and its rich russet skin. The irregular pebble-like form preserves the feeling of the original material, allowing the natural character of the jade to remain central to the work’s appeal.
One face is delicately engraved with a poetic inscription beneath a lightly rendered landscape composition, in which figures appear within a rocky setting. The combination of image and text gives the piece a distinctly literati character, transforming the natural jade boulder into an object of contemplation as well as display. Rather than relying on heavy carving, the decoration is handled with restraint, allowing the surface, color variation, and quiet presence of the stone to remain dominant.
Objects of this kind are especially valued for the dialogue between nature and artifice. Here, the warm russet inclusions create a painterly effect across the stone, while the incised poem and landscape introduce an additional layer of cultural meaning. The result is a scholar’s object of strong cabinet presence, appreciated for material quality, sculptural silhouette, and poetic atmosphere.
