Overview
A substantial lapis lazuli mountain carving with figures, pavilions, and pine trees, notable for its vivid blue stone, layered landscape composition, and strong scholar’s-object presence.
Description
This impressive lapis lazuli mountain carving is conceived as a miniature landscape populated by figures, architecture, and ancient trees. Worked in high relief from richly colored blue stone with natural white and grey inclusions, the composition unfolds as a dramatic mountainous retreat, in which scholars appear in conversation beneath towering cliffs and beside winding paths. The vivid material gives the piece immediate visual power, while the deeply carved surfaces create a sense of movement, depth, and narrative interest.
Particularly striking is the way the natural character of the lapis has been integrated into the carving. Broad passages of saturated ultramarine blue alternate with lighter mineral veining and cloud-like inclusions, animating the mountains and enhancing the pictorial effect of mist, rock, and distance. Pavilions perched among the peaks and stylized pine trees extending across the foreground reinforce the classical literati atmosphere, transforming the stone into a fully realized world in miniature.
Objects of this type are especially admired for the meeting of material beauty and sculptural imagination. Here, the work functions both as a carved hardstone masterpiece and as a scholar’s object intended for contemplation and display. The fitted zitan stand further elevates the presentation, grounding the composition with richness and refinement. The result is a cabinet piece of strong decorative impact, appreciated for its scale, carving quality, and poetic landscape character.
