Overview

A finely potted Longquan celadon dish of shallow, elegant form, covered in a soft olive-green glaze and decorated with restrained incised ornament. The piece reflects the quiet refinement associated with Longquan ware, where balanced proportion, subtle surface carving, and luminous glaze work together to create an understated but highly sophisticated ceramic object.

Description

This dish is potted with a broad open surface, gently rising sides, and a neatly formed foot, giving it a calm and well-balanced silhouette. It is covered overall in a muted celadon glaze with a smooth, even appearance that enhances the clarity of the form while allowing the carved decoration to remain subtle and refined.

The interior is decorated with an incised central medallion featuring a stylized fish motif, enclosed within a double-line border. Additional lightly incised ornamental details appear across the cavetto, contributing visual rhythm without overwhelming the surface. The decoration remains quiet and integrated, relying on line and glaze tone rather than bold contrast. This restraint is one of the defining aesthetic strengths of Longquan celadon.

The underside is similarly well considered, with radiating carved petal-like panels arranged around the foot. These details enrich the reverse and demonstrate the care given to the vessel as a complete object rather than only as a frontal display piece. The base also shows kiln-related firing traces consistent with traditional ceramic production.

With its broad dish form, gentle celadon tone, and softly incised ornament, this piece possesses a distinctly scholarly and contemplative character. It works equally well as a ceramic display object, a cabinet piece, or as part of a collection focused on Chinese celadon wares and Song–Yuan related ceramic traditions.
