Overview
A serene Ming dynasty copper-gilt seated Buddha, shown in the earth-touching gesture, admired for its calm expression, elegant proportions, and richly worn gilt surface that speaks to age and devotional presence.
Description
This seated Buddha is cast in copper and finished with gilding, presenting a dignified image of the Enlightened One in a classical meditation posture. The figure sits cross-legged with the right hand extended downward in the earth-touching gesture and the left hand resting in the lap, an iconography traditionally associated with the moment of enlightenment. The face is composed and symmetrical, with gently lowered eyes, an urna at the brow, elongated earlobes, and a softly modeled mouth that conveys stillness and inward concentration.
Particularly appealing is the sculpture’s surface character. The gilding survives in a beautifully varied state, with broad areas of warm gold tonality alternating with naturally worn passages that reveal the underlying metal and centuries of handling or age-related change. This weathered surface gives the figure depth, authenticity, and a strong devotional presence, avoiding the overly bright appearance of later decorative gilt figures. The contrast between the darker hair curls and the luminous facial and bodily planes further enhances the sculpture’s visual rhythm.
The drapery is handled with restraint and refinement. Beaded borders and incised decorative bands articulate the robe across the shoulder, torso, arms, and legs, adding detail without disturbing the sculpture’s quiet overall mass. The body is well proportioned, with broad shoulders, a gently tapering waist, and a stable seated form that reads convincingly from all angles. The rear view is especially attractive, where the robe gathers in broad, elegant folds across the back and shoulder.
The underside shows a sealed base panel with a floral medallion motif, a feature that adds to the object’s sculptural integrity and traditional presentation. Altogether, the figure is best appreciated as a devotional bronze of strong decorative and spiritual presence, equally suitable for collectors of Buddhist art, Chinese gilt bronzes, and works intended for contemplative display.
