Overview

A finely carved Shoushan stone figure of a seated luohan, notable for its warm honey-toned stone, softly polished surface, and intimate devotional character.

Description

This small Shoushan stone carving represents a luohan seated in a relaxed yet composed posture, the figure’s rounded features and gently flowing robes conveying both calm dignity and approachable warmth. The figure is shown with a shaved head, elongated ears, and a faintly smiling expression, creating a mood of quiet contemplation rather than formal severity. Its compact scale gives the work an immediate sense of intimacy, while the smooth polish enhances the tactile appeal of the stone.

Particularly attractive is the character of the material itself. The stone displays a rich honey-yellow tone enlivened by naturally distributed reddish-brown veins and inclusions, which have been skillfully incorporated into the carving to animate the folds of the robe and the contours of the figure. This natural variation gives the sculpture visual depth and individuality, allowing the beauty of the material to play an equal role with the carving.

The luohan is accompanied by a small attendant creature at one side, adding a lively narrative touch to the composition and softening the devotional theme with a sense of charm and movement. Works of this kind are especially appreciated for the way they combine religious imagery, refined material, and cabinet-scale presence. This example is best understood as a sculptural scholar’s object as well as a devotional figure, valued for its warmth, serenity, and finely handled stone surface.
