Overview
A carved wooden figure of Guanyin standing on a lotus base, notable for its serene expression, attenuated proportions, and quiet devotional presence.
Description
This carved wooden figure represents Guanyin standing in a composed frontal pose upon a lotus pedestal. The sculpture is distinguished by its elongated proportions, softly modeled features, and restrained treatment of drapery, all of which contribute to a calm and contemplative presence. The face, with its downcast eyes, gently closed mouth, and centered urna-like marking at the brow, conveys a sense of inward stillness and spiritual gravity.
Particularly appealing is the simplicity of the carving. The figure is rendered with a high headdress, elongated ears, and long descending robes that fall in measured vertical folds to the base. The hands are gathered before the torso, reinforcing the image’s devotional character, while the narrow body and upright stance give the sculpture a dignified and ascetic elegance. The lotus base anchors the figure visually and strengthens its identity within the Buddhist sculptural tradition.
The aged wooden surface adds much to the work’s appeal. Areas of wear, soft abrasion, and natural tonal variation give the sculpture a quiet authority and a sense of long devotional life. Rather than relying on elaborate ornament, the work derives its strength from line, proportion, and expression. It is best appreciated as a devotional image and cabinet sculpture, valued for its spiritual restraint, material presence, and connection to the enduring visual language of early Buddhist art.
